All sounds very interesting. Let us know when you want us to jump back in to playtesting.

This sounds good. Your ability to think clearly and in new ways about these game mechanics is your strength. I think it will work out to have everything exposed, rather than trying to hide much from the player. The only exception I can see is if a leader is clearly trying a ruse, doublecross type approach. That cannot possibly be exposed to the player. How will this work?

My hope is that when I get a nasty dialog like the one shown at the top of your post above, I have some reasons for choosing between the Alemanni and the Goths. Such as, how strong they are, what they want, what their goals are and if they align with mine, whether we have any existing commitments or relationships, even what their values are maybe. If I have to make the decision without any reasons, based on how they look or insufficient information about what they want, then I don't see the decisions being fun.

If I can sometimes make the 'strategic' decision, sometimes the 'moral' decision, sometimes the 'tactical' decision, and know myself what I am doing and why, then it sounds like I can make a narrative from that.

Interesting. Will need to see how it works with the units in game.

Maybe Emperor of the Fading Suns? It's a science fiction 4X, but i think it has the same feeling of decline of a great empire. You control one of the Great Houses that tries to unite it back.

Wow, that is an oldie but a goodie. Not many will have played it, but the setting and game play were terrific.

Best known? Arthur?

Geiseric? I'm not sure where exactly Rome's backyard is...but the Vandals resided in many of them.

Well he does look Celtic. I'm not sure who though.

At least I got into them without too many problems today. Maybe a bit fixed.

Alaric and Theoderic?

OK, I posted this on the design round table but that is probably the wrong forum.

Thatís a fantastic insight into how you are structuring the AI. It raises many, many questions for me. I will love to see how it comes together.

For the TAI:

- Will there be a N-ply search with alpha-beta pruning as per a chess AI? Is N variable, and what number did you have in mind for N?

Has someone mentioned 'Decline and Fall'? I played that some time around when it was released (1972). I'm that old :P

All sounds good in theory. Three VCs is better than one.

Off-Topic / Re: In the meantime, what are you playing?

I hope I am not taking this thread too far "off topic", but it is in the "off topic" forum...

There is definitely something quite special about Colonization. The use of specialists is not unique to the game (see Imperialism I and II for example), but is a really neat mechanism. It makes you think about the use of every little guy. The terrain seems to make a lot of sense, and provide a lot of interesting challenges. The religion and liberty mechanics are really interesting. The great person (Founding Fathers) tree is endlessly interesting and difficult to analyse.

If you didn't know, Jon produced the prototype of CivIV:Col on which it was based. Not sure what involvement he had after that.

It seems to me that the war of independence (which I have yet to reach in my most recent game) is the least effective part of the game.

Many of the mechanics of colonisation could (and I am sure will) be re-used in different scenarios and milieu.

Bizarrely, I have gone back to playing CivIV Colonization with The Authentic Colonization mod, and having a hard but fun time with it. The mod improves it considerably. Whoever the designer of that was, not sure they knew what they were doing!

 (e.g. SSI's Imperialism).

An un-exhausted resource of new ideas and good gameplay concepts. Still fun, many years on.
