Title: Seriously, WTF
Post by: DevildogFF on July 19, 2016, 05:33:53 PM
Jon, you haven't updated the private build in MONTHS, you haven't been around AND you haven't updated any of us on the development of this game in months.

I'm nearly certain that this has been abandoned and you just haven't told us yet. $50 wasted.

Pretty sure this type of post is not helpful. Hope it made you feel better though--gettin' it off your chest, like.

What isn't helpful is YOUR post, actually. Jon has collected money on a game that he's supposedly developing. Going MONTHS without communication is unprofessional, classless and downright wrong.

So, glad YOU got it off your chest.

But it wasn't over for John Rambo. Not in a welshman's ballbag. Rambo came back three times to kill commies / hippies / assorted foreign-type individuals.

Well, if its over, why is the forum still up?

Cause he doesn't care?

in this day and age, unless he's living in a cave or laid up in the hospital, there's no reason why he can't take 5 minutes out of his busy schedule each week to post something or at least have a moderator post something.

The fact that he does not communicate and has not updated the build since March 5th tells me that the project has most likely been cancelled or put aside indefinitely and he's too much of a coward to tell us that he's failed.

has not updated the build since February

Internal code show March 5th.  Still bad, but not as bad as Feb.  ;)

Code: [Select]
Log.WriteLine(LogType.Program, "GAME VERSION : ".PadLeft(19) + GAME.Version + "-2016 March 5");

Based on the attention to detail (tooltips, clan traits, theme, music) in this game it seems to me that At the Gates is something Jon cares deeply about. It will be finished and released. There are lots of reasons why someone might not want to communicate. Personally I would prefer Jon not give updates and either work on the game or take a break from it if it's getting to be more of a chore than a passion for him.

I didn't give him money, but if I did, I would feel differently than your post.

See dancingbogman, the difference between what you're talking about and what I'm talking about is that he received approx. $96,000 (after KS fees) to build what he proposed to the backers.  The expected completion date was supposed to be in 2014.   he received a lot more money than he asked for and he picked the completion date.  We are now in 2016 with no known completion date and no idea how that money was spent.

By accepting the money, he made an agreement with us and there should be accountability for that.

Now, if this was a flash game on kong, then whatever.  Free is free and you can't complain

I bought the game last year but didn't kickstart it. It is hard to know how close the game is to completion but I have already played it for 50+ hours. So I feel pretty satisfied with the price I paid. I get that there are a lot of people frustrated but making a strategy game is hard--I should know because I've made none. I get the sense that the hold up we are experiencing now has to do with endgame mechanics or victory conditions. Can you imagine how long testing that stuff takes?

I still believe itll be done. Game is even great as it is

I agree.  I've really enjoyed the game as is, and I expect it will only get better as more pieces of it get completed.

I have played 0 zero hours as I did not spend the money needed to get the alpha.  I would be happy to play the alpha for 50 hours and call it a deal if that was offered.

Secondly the reason that developers set dates and expectations is specifically to get things done.  He set the dates and expectations as an expert in his field.  If he's over his head and it will takes years more to develop, then there needs to be a discussion, not silence.

Last communication I've seen from him was a note on a general gaming forum that he was alive, and still working on the game ("Currently working on faction traits").
That was a month ago.

:(

No, he is a Ron Artest.

I think he's a talented game developer going through some personal problems thats tanking his dream of being an independent developer. Damn shame, as the alpha is really just missing an end game/meta goal.

I'm not a big fan of using "personal problems" as an excuse to not perform.  People rely on me to do my job, take care of family, and support my community.  They expect this regardless of whether I'm sick or overworked or dealing with a death in the family.  An 80 hour work week does not preclude me from being at a soccer game 7 am Saturday morning, nor does it give me excuse to be an asshole to everyone else attending.

Point being, Jon was given $96,000 to do a job and he needs to do it.  He needs to pick his sorry ass up off the floor and explain to all the backers why he's 2 years past due on his promises

I'm at this point, too.

I have a lot of "personal problems", but if I let them affect my professional life like he has, I'd be out of a job.

How the hell is ANYONE being an apologist right now?

I'm sorry but I am not an apologist.

I've joined the kickstarter and for three years I've followed and enjoyd all of Shafer updates and designer talks, that I've found very interesting - and gradually everything has descended into silence. I liked the concept of the game in 2013, and I still like it and I still wish to see it completed.
I've not paid for the alpha so I've only seen the videos, and I was eager to play it, because of its originality and the historic theme.

Every now and then I lurk the forums to see if there are news, and everytime I'm disappointed and this hurts me.
I hope Shafer and the rest of the team are still working on the game, I hope that nothing bad has happened, and that he isn't suffering a burnout.
I know, these are only personal thoughts: the only thing I really want is an update on the general status of the project.

Frankly I want to trust him, all this time he seemed to me very committed and enthusiastic about At The Gates.
And if the worst case scenario happens, please release the alpha to all the backers.

Apparently the project is still alive - a new updated version was posted this week.

Yup came here to post the same thing. Aug 11 was the date referenced IIRC.

Played two games after update i august. Seems less stable, crashed couple of time, earlier build crashed only with neutral family merges into the camp.

Where are the release notes for the update?

The latest build was posted September 2nd. Just downloading it now, hopefully it fixes the crashiness.

C'mon Jon - time for an update. At least it seems like things are still happening, more or less. Somewhere else I read a post about some legal stuff preventing Jon from giving an update until the contract is signed/approved etc. Hopefully it all works out.

Seems a bit optimistic to hope that we could be only a few months away from having a finished game. But I'm definitely an optimist.

Last update I've seen (on the kickstarter page) was that everything public facing was on hold while he discussed the project with investors (I guess to finance the final push, and get a few more full time developers on board to finish it?)
